Follow your Bliss

“Dragon Kite”  – 30×40 Acrylic and Watercolor on Paper

If you do follow your bliss you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life you ought to be living is one you are living.

~Joseph Campbell

Recently while traveling I stayed at Fort Walton Beach for some R and R. Just a couple of days along large bodies of open water. There is something about the sand and the expanse of blue that seems to never end except for a jeans blue line where the sky and water meet. So peaceful, even when there are huge waves, so freeing, so full of nothingness yet everythingness.

I decided to purchase a kite, it was windy, just a normal kite with a long string and tail. The wind grabbed my delightful attachment immediately, sitting on a beach chair for the next two hours I lazily flew my kite. It’s wings spread it gracefully played in the wind. I must say I haven’t found this kind of peace for a long long time. This peace that is what I call nothingness. No cares, just watching and feeling the spirit the soul of that kite, joined with the wind, the pale blue sky and the jeans blue water that rhythmically moved up on the sand. The water changed to an emerald green color when the suns light bounced off the white sand.

Everything was blissful.

There are some who think life for all should be like my experience with the kite and water, sun and sand all the time. I strongly believe that I would not have had this experience – one like this – had I not had the other experiences that fill my life. It is hard for me to sit still for a minute, I have been that way for as long as I can remember, let along two hours. Just in bliss.
There are some so say that the concept of art and aesthetics produce this experience. I am one of them. But for that to be all that art is or can be would make art nothing. Art needs to be more than that. It needs to speak, to make others speak. It needs to move, and make others be moved. It needs to challenge, to make one think, deeply think about life, reality and the diversity that exists within. Art is not and should not be just bliss – it needs to be more than that or we would never have the experience I had on the beach with my kite.

I am thinking of putting a “Kite Flying Event “together – soon – anyone interested? It will be an event celebrating, bliss but also diversity that makes bliss possible. It will be announced on moment’s notice kind of thing, as we need the wind. Let me know. You will need a kite and you will need to be ready to go at the drop of a pin. One thing I do know – I do know that you will find me in some open, space more often flying my kite and reminding me of that moment on the beach and what life is all about. It is not about leveling the playing field, it is about celebrating what we have and each other.
